MasterCard International is a retail electronics payment processor helping to process transactions between the banks representing merchants and those of customers who use a card carrying the Master Card logo as payment for a transaction. Based on market share statistics from a Nielsen report in 2006, MasterCard is said to hold the second largest amount of credit cards in the United States. Master Card is a well-known brand name in many countries around the world. Before it became a publicly traded company in 2006, MasterCard International was a membership organization collectively owned by over 25,000 financial institutions representing more than 200 countries. Also in 2006, the company changed its name (and corporate logo) from MasterCard International to MasterCard Worldwide. MasterCard is a widely accepted form of payment in Canada. A lot of Canadian banks are known to issue their own credit, debit, and charge cards based on the MasterCard network.
